Our Story
Merge Rot was born in 2018 in a small apartment shared by three college friends with a shared passion for puzzle games and retro aesthetics. What started as a weekend project quickly evolved into something much bigger when our prototype went viral during a local game jam.
Our founders – Marcus Chen, Elena Rodriguez, and Devon Taylor – combined their expertise in game design, pixel art, and programming to create what they called "a merge game with consequences." The unique rot mechanic was actually inspired by Elena's forgotten houseplant collection, which led to the realization that time pressure could add a fascinating strategic layer to the traditional merging formula.
By 2020, we had secured our first round of funding and assembled a small but talented team of developers dedicated to refining the core gameplay mechanics. The game underwent extensive player testing, with each iteration adding depth to the experience while maintaining the accessibility that made merge games so popular.
In 2022, we officially released Merge Rot across multiple platforms, and we've been overwhelmed by the positive response from players worldwide. Today, our studio has grown to 15 full-time team members, but we maintain the same passion and indie spirit that sparked the original idea. We're constantly evolving the game based on community feedback while staying true to our retro-inspired roots.
